Treasurer

Emily Wu

  • In an environment of global economic uncertainty, it is vital that SULS safeguards its long-term financial position. By reinvesting excess reserves into a low-risk, annualised investment fund, we can protect against inflation and generate stable returns. This ensures that SULS’ future executives and members inherit a financially secure organisation capable of funding high-impact student events and initiatives.

  • Building a sustainable investment base strengthens our independence and amplifies what SULS can deliver for law students in the years ahead.

Treasury Subcommittee

  • Sound financial governance starts with collaboration and accountability. The reinstated Treasury Subcommittee will oversee all investment and expenditure decisions, ensuring that funds are managed prudently and transparently, as well as becoming equity and investment analysts for the year-long SULS Annual Fund (as with Smart Investment).

  • As such, this will provide regular oversight and recommendations to the Executive, fostering both discipline and innovation in how SULS allocates and grows its money whilst locking in interest from often under-served Commerce/Law cohort.

Accessible Transparency

  • Financial transparency means more than publishing dense spreadsheets — it means making information clear, engaging, and accessible.

  • Regular expenditure summaries will be shared online through SULS’ social channels, using simple visual formats that help students see exactly how funds are being spent. These reports will also create valuable historical records to guide future budgeting decisions and improve accountability across successive executive teams.

Empowering Budgeting

  • Great ideas often arise outside of the initial budget cycle. Through a formal approval process, committees will have access to a flexible contingency fund to support unplanned initiatives that align with SULS’ mission.

  • This policy empowers committees to act on new opportunities and student needs as they arise, while maintaining rigorous documentation and justification standards to ensure responsible use of funds.
