Vice President (Social Justice)

  • We know getting that first law job is always difficult when everyone wants you to have prior legal experience. That’s why we want to partner with community legal centres to reserve a portion of winter volunteer intakes, just for you! This will not only bolster the careers aspect of the SJ portfolio, but also help strengthen pre-penultimate careers support more broadly by creating a clear pathway for students.

  • Non-corporate careers are not a one-size fits all and each sector deserves its opportunity to shine all year round. That’s why we’re bringing you tailored networking and information events for each alternative career sector (incl. CLCs, Not-for-Profit In-House Teams, criminal defence firms, aged/disability care legal teams, and more) so that you get to hear exactly what a job in each of these fields will look like, the same way we let individual corporate firms shine.

Revamping SJ Programs

  • If the Youth Justice Mentoring Scheme cannot be revived, we propose a new program designed with flexibility in mind through embedded digital volunteering pathways, like a partnership with the Kookaburra Kids Foundation or the Raise Foundation. This would allow students to virtually (or in-person) mentor disadvantaged and struggling youth in a way that works best for them, and their mentees.

  • Legal education doesn’t have to be formal or clinical. With education events by law students for law students, we hope to keep you engaged with important law reforms, protocols and issues, and provide you with a forum to take action. We will also create resources to share information about pressing law reform issues so that you don’t have to attend events to access important information.

  • With the law school entering a justice-centred era, we propose a new program allowing students to get involved with research, policy review and publication on a casual basis, by developing legal education resources to be made publicly available on our website

An SJ Portfolio That Works For YOU

  • We want to deliver a social justice program that works well for you, so you can work to help others. That starts with a clear calendar of all of our programs, noting application cycles and expected commitments, so that you know exactly how and when to get involved, and can plan ahead the same way that you do for competitions.

  • We understand how busy life gets so we want to streamline our programs and events, offering you digital flexibility to get involved, as well as SJ events like Table Talks at high-traffic times on campus so that you don’t have to go out of your way to attend.
